Six years ago, after completing my first drawing of @winnieharlow in 2019, I experienced a profound realisation: in all my years studying portraiture - from the Old Masters to contemporary artists - I had rarely, if ever, encountered a portrait that represented someone with a visible skin condition or difference. That absence resonated deeply with me. It led me to question the traditional narratives often upheld in portraiture and ultimately inspired the “Drawing Awareness” series - a body of work dedicated to honouring individuality, celebrating difference, and expanding the visual language of beauty within fine art.My decision to draw Winnie again was not solely to bring awareness to vitiligo, but more so because I continue to be moved by the pride and confidence with which she wears her skin. Following her journey over the years, I’ve been inspired by how powerfully she embraces her appearance and uses her platform to empower others to do the same. Her presence has helped many with similar skin conditions feel seen, valued, and beautiful.I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to photographer @daniellamidenge, whose image of Winnie served as the primary reference for this drawing. For this second portrait, I was intent on capturing Winnie’s vitiligo in its entirety, and Daniella’s photograph offered a striking and sensitive portrayal that made that possible.Winnie… It’s been an honour to draw you not once, but twice - each time inspired by your strength, grace and story. Your presence and message continue to uplift and empower so many. I’m deeply grateful to have connected through art 🙏🏾🤎

My grandfathers love was boundless. I never heard him speak with more pride about anything than his 15 grandkids. He had a soft spot in his heart for the women of our family. His mother, sisters, wife, daughters, granddaughters and great granddaughters. He told my mother my whole life how beautiful I was. And the very last time I spent with him last month and grabbed my hands and looked at my skin and said in the softest voice “so beautiful, so cool”. He gave us confidence. His family was his joy, his legacy, his reason to smile. The most caring selfless man I’ve ever known. He had the kindest eyes, and the funniest humor. He gave without hesitation and loved without limits. He’s the reason my family walks this path, lives this life. If my grandfather hadn’t made the terrifying journey of immigration, leaving behind all he knew for a future he could only hope for, I might not have had the opportunities I have today. Every single day, I strive to honour him to make sure his sacrifices weren’t made in vain. And I hold close the strength of my grandmother, whose prayers for us never stopped.Every time he was called, he ran to us. Whether is was a new baby being born, a surprise pop in with food to make sure you were fed or a late night pick up when you had no way home and no one to call, he was there. Always. That kind of love, that kind of presence, is the most beautiful thing a person can give. And I was lucky enough to receive it.A man that was always there for his family. A man who showed up, not just in the big ways, but in the small, quiet moments that make a life whole.For every lesson there was love, compassion and understanding. As we try to navigate this life without our amazing Patriarch, I find comfort in knowing you are in eternal peace and in the blessing I was given to have experienced a grandpa like you. Papa, you will always be my home, you will always live in my heart. I will always be obsessed with you. Thank you. I love you forever 🕊️❤️
